The 4th annual Butch Shay Memorial for the Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass Super Late Model Series was on Saturday, July 7th. Richmond Raceway located southeast of Lexington in Richmond, KY served as hosts of the UBOB cars and stars for the second all-time appearance in series history. The night before, the Prelude to the Butch Shay Memorial was rained out, so everyone was on an even playing field leading into the $5,000 to win showdown. When all was said and done, Jared Hawkins emerged victorious after race-long leader, Tommy Bailey jumped the cushion, breaking a tie rod and taking down the turn four guardrail, handing the lead to Hawkins who made no mistake in holding off Eric Wells for the win.

“I’d rather be lucky than good,” Smiled the 31-year-old driver from Fairmont, WV after climbing from his #11 Tim Logan Racing / Rocket XR1 Chassis / Clements Racing Engines machine to a rousing ovation from the packed grandstands. “We were in such a battle there with Eric (Wells) for second for what seemed like the whole race, I didn’t think we had anything for Tommy (Bailey). Then when he (Bailey) had his deal there, I still wasn’t quite sure if we’d be able to hold Eric (Wells) off. But we did it. Thanks to Tim, Cameron, Lee, Rick, Rondall and all the guys who work hard week in and week out.” He added.

Hawkins and Bailey led the field to the green flag for the 50-lap / $5,000 to win main event of the weekend. Bailey would utilize the outside lane to take the lead from Hawkins who then had to deal with Wells, the 2013 World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series rookie of the year, who started behind him in third. Despite six cautions before the halfway point, Bailey was up to the task on each Delaware Double-File Restart and would pull away from the Hawkins/Wells battle after each and every restart.

There were two more restarts once halfway was reached and each time, Bailey would inch away from Hawkins and Wells who never left each other’s side. With three laps to go and heading into turns three and four, Bailey, who had been working the high line for most of the race, jumped the cushion, breaking a tie rod and crashed hard into the turn four guardrail, climbing it and tearing it off its posts. After a 20-minute delay to repair the guardrail. The final restart would see Hawkins get away from Wells from the drop of the last green flag and go on to score his first career Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass Super Late Model Series Feature win.

Wells settled for second over 2017 Butch Shay Memorial winner, Jason Jameson, who started ninth. V.P. Racing Fuels Fast Qualifier, Duane Chamberlain grabbed fourth ahead of defending track champion, Derek Fisher who completed the top five. Daniel Dial scored a sixth-place finish while five-time track champion, Jason Barrett was seventh after starting 16th. Austin Burns was eighth after starting deep in the field in 22nd while 16-year-old Dalton Brown was ninth from 18th and Tim Turgate rounded out the top 10. Earlier in the afternoon, Chamberlain out-qualified the 25-car field to win the V.P. Racing Fuels Fast Qualifier award with a 14.682 while Hawkins, Bailey and Wells won the Qualifier Heat Races.
